Geo-environmental Consultant / Senior Consultant - Leeds or Manchester

Opportunity for a suitably experienced (3+ years) Geotechnical or Geo-Environmental specialist to join our growing multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy. Based in the Manchester or Leeds offices, the role will involve delivering geo-environmental solutions and advisory services on projects within the property, industrial and construction sectors across the UK and potentially Europe.

Experience:

  • An effective track record of managing the practical technical and financial aspects relating to developing proposals for the completion of projects and delivering projects.
  • Suitable experience of site supervision of investigation works to either complete or direct others in the completion of. 
  • To demonstrate the ability to design conceptual models to understand geological/environmental conditions in advance of ground investigation, including the assessment of risks from mine workings, risks from potential contamination sources, review of viable foundation solutions and constraints to development.
  • To demonstrate the ability to prepare logs compliant to BS5930 and the associated use of Holebase (or similar) soil logging software.
  • To demonstrate a working knowledge of geo-environmental investigation, sampling and in-situ testing.
  • To demonstrate a working knowledge of appropriate environmental and geotechnical laboratory tests, their scheduling and interpretation. 
  • A working knowledge of the design of conceptual models/ theoretical thought. To demonstrate a working knowledge of appropriate design methods for shallow foundations (bearing capacity and settlement analysis), and ideally knowledge of appropriate design methods for piles, retaining walls, earthworks, pavements, geotechnical structure (e.g. reinforced earth, soil nailed slopes), ground improvement and slope stability.
  • Knowledge of analytical skills using computer software and technical guidance documents for the assessment of data to determine the required outcome for the project.
  • To demonstrate a working knowledge of the requirements and guidance provided by appropriate British Standards (for Earthworks, Site Investigation, Foundations, Reinforced Earth and Retaining Structures), appropriate Highways Agency Documents (for Earthworks and other geotechnical structures) and specialist guidance prepared by BRE Reports (e.g. sulphates, ground improvement, construction on fill), CIRIA Reports (e.g. Engineering properties of specific soil/rock types, pile design, dewatering).
  • To demonstrate a working knowledge of risk assessment software packages (such as P20 or Consim) to determine risks to controlled water and human health receptors and to provide remediation targets, if necessary.
  • To demonstrate a working knowledge in the interpretation of geological maps published data and site walkover information in assessing geotechnical risks (e.g. slope stability, soft ground, mining) and environmental risks (e.g. whether pollutant linkages exist) for Phase I and Phase II investigations.
  • To demonstrate a working knowledge in the technical management of investigations (e.g. recognising when ground conditions are at variance from those anticipated and require the investigation to be varied and appropriate interfacing with other disciplines and/or Client). 
  • To demonstrate an ability to write clear and concise factual reports.
  • To demonstrate a developing ability to prepare clear, concise and effective interpretative reports.
  • Sound communication and personal effectiveness skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships at all levels within the business, with clients, subcontractors and other third parties (regulators, statutory consultees, etc.).

Responsibilities:

  • Work as a consultant or senior consultant within a Team/Business Unit. Responsible for management, financial and technical input to projects, including provision of proposals, project planning, management of resources (office or site based) and sub-contractors, completion of appropriate scheduling of laboratory testing, site monitoring, data assessment, reporting and financial performance.
  • Engagement in direct account management and development as part of an Account Management Team.
  • To effectively communicate within a delivery team to achieve a project brief through provision of efficient and professional services.
  • With the support of an appropriate person at a Principal or Director grade provide solutions to technical problems and write technical reports.
  • To provide clear and factually correct reports that require minimal re-writing or amendment by an authorising signatory.
  • To work within and be a champion for, the company health, safety and environmental policies.

Earthworks Monitoring Senior - Bedford (Ref: GSOU004)

Temporary to Permanent Contract: experienced Earthworks Engineer required to provide ongoing monitoring of earthworks at site in Bedfordshire. MSc in Geotechnics and significant track record of working on earthworks projects or equivalent experience required.

Will consider three days a week and/or full time dependent upon quality of candidate. Role will be predominantly site based for first 3-4 months (project duration) with potential to move to a permanent role with the business working on projects across the UK based on performance and if desired by the candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare logs compliant to ISO14688.
  • Ground investigation techniques, sampling and in-situ testing.
  • To demonstrate knowledge and developing expertise of appropriate laboratory tests, their scheduling and interpretation and together with associated British Standards.
  • Development of appropriate ground models and associated ground water and geotechnical design parameters for slopes, earthworks, road pavements, retaining walls and foundations
  • Appropriate basic design methods for shallow foundations (bearing capacity and settlement analysis), piles, retaining walls, earthworks, pavements, ground improvement and slope stability.
  • Use of generic guidance for the assessment of surface and groundwater contamination, using UK DWS and EQS guidelines.

  • To demonstrate knowledge of UK legislation relating to ground contamination.

  • Principal focus will be initially in relation to the delivery of geo-environmental works including ground investigations and report writing as well as Environmental Due Diligence assessments.
  • Effectively communicate and co-operate within a project team to support the achievement of a project brief through the provision of efficient and professional services.
  • With the support of a Senior or Principal to assist in providing solutions to technical problems and provide input to technical reports that require minimum re-writing or amendment by an authorising signatory.

Assistant Driller - Lincoln (DOFF001)

Opportunity for Assistant Driller to join a growing multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy. Based in the Lincoln office, these roles will involve working throughout the UK on various sites; training will be given to the suitable candidate.

Delta-Simons is a nationwide, multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy specialising in Environment, Health & Safety and Sustainability advice and support within the Property Development, Asset Management, Corporate and Industrial markets.

Experience:

  • Ideally candidates will have drilling experience (but not essential).
  • Be safety-aware and prepared to work to strictly managed sites.

Responsibilities:

Assisting Lead Driller on and off site with:

  • Geo-environmental & geotechnical drilling, producing environmental & geotechnical sampling.
  • Rotary open hole drilling, rotary coring, dynamic sampling, on-site geotechnical testing, BRE365 testing and more.
  • Heavy lifting of tools and loads.
  • Maintaining, cleaning, organising, loading and unloading at our unit for sites, and assisting where required.

Qualifications:

  • Desired qualifications include: CSCS, NVQ, CPCS, NRSWA, Manual Handling, First Aid, Street Works, but training can be provided to suitable candidates.
  • A full, clean driving licence is essential, desirable is a C1+E.
