The Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act 2007

The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 came into force in the UK on 6 April 2008 and sets out a new offence for convicting an organisation (rather than  individuals*) where a gross failure in the way activities were managed or organised results in a person’s death.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 came into force in England and Wales on 1 April 2006 and introduced compulsory fire risk assessments for the first time.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment

The Carbon Reduction Commitment now known as the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, is the UK’s first mandatory carbon trading scheme due to commence in 2010. It is central to the UK’s strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as set out in the Climate Change Act 2008. It is likely to affect around 5,000-20,000 public and private sector organisations in the UK including banking, retail, local authorities (including education), property, transport, manufacturing and health and insurance.

The Definition of Waste: Development Industry Code of Practice (CoP)

Until recently the Environment Agency (EA) applied a very strict interpretation of the definition of waste to the development industry. This meant that they practically regarded all excavated materials, soils and demolition materials as waste. Developers argued that this was acting as a barrier to the development of Brownfield sites.

Site Waste Management Plans Update

30th April 2008

Disposal of site waste not only entails the cost at the landfill gate but also includes haulage, labour, notifications, paperwork and the cost of the material itself. Of the 92 million tonnes of demolition and construction  waste disposed of each year, a staggering 13 million tonnes is unused new material disposed of because it is defective or damaged on site.
