Geotechnical & Environmental Consultants - Adept
Delta-Simons has provided geotechnical and environmental consultancy services to Adept Consulting Engineers for a number of years and was asked, on behalf of their client Newcrest Ltd, to undertake Phase I and intrusive Phase II investigation works at a proposed development site in Ebbsfleet Valley.
The site was associated with the mixed residential and commercial redevelopment which formed the commercial hub of the wider Ebbsfleet Valley Regeneration development. The site was located within a former infilled chalk quarry, where upwards of 30m of engineered and un-engineered fill had been placed following cessation of quarrying activities.
Outline / Scope of Works
Delta-Simons undertook a five-week intrusive ground investigation which comprised of trial pitting, TRL-DCP testing and the drilling of 10 deep cable percussive boreholes into the underlying chalk bedrock, through the significant depths of infilled ground to a maximum depth of 44m below ground level. The works were completed during some of the worst weather conditions of 2016 (Storm Angus), but despite this all works were completed to the pre-determined completion date. Soil samples were collected for a range of environmental and geotechnical analyses and preliminary waste classification. Following completion of the site works, a period of ground gas / groundwater monitoring was completed, and detailed plot specific geotechnical and environmental assessment reports were prepared.
Outcome / Client Benefits
Despite the severe weather conditions, intrusive works ran smoothly and the job was completed on time. Environmental laboratory analysis was able to de-risk the site from a contamination perspective.
Delta-Simons was able to recommend a range of potential foundation solutions tailored to the difficult ground conditions and the range of proposed developments.
