Disposal of site waste not only entails the cost at the landfill gate but also includes haulage, labour, notifications, paperwork and the cost of the material itself. Of the 92 million tonnes of demolition and construction waste disposed of each year, a staggering 13 million tonnes is unused new material disposed of because it is defective or damaged on site.
Initially starting out as a voluntary code of practice, Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP) became a legal requirement on 3rd April 2008. Although this applies to projects with a value over £300,000 the benefits of SWMPs are not limited to larger companies. They will be applicable to a wide range of projects from buildings and infrastructure to new build and refurbishment.
