Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Intern

Delta-Simons is a multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy providing Geo-environmental, EHS, Environmental Planning, Ecology, Sustainability and Wellbeing services at a regional and national level within the UK, as well as internationally through the Inogen® Environmental Alliance, a global network of over 4,330 environmental specialists.

Based at our Leeds office, Delta-Simons are offering a student an exciting work placement opportunity to work on, with support from Delta-Simons, a GIS based placement.

Vision

Our vision is to enhance our Digital Services business line to improve efficiencies across all business lines, including GIS at its core to store, retrieve, manage, display and analyse all types of geographic and spatial data. 

Project Summary

An investigation into and development of Quantum Geographical Information System (QGIS) to drive efficiencies in current ‘business as usual’ activities and explore future opportunities for GIS growth.

Aims

  • Gain an understanding of the current and intended future use of GIS at Delta-Simons
  • Develop a functioning system for QGIS that supports ‘business as usual’ activities by:
    • Complementing and driving efficiencies in Digital Field Mapping developments (using QField);
    • Integrating QGIS development to support a business-wide expansion of GIS (including some indication of training requirements);
  • Review the potential of QGIS plugins and further opportunities to support and expand the use of GIS at Delta-Simons; and
  • Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) to QGIS business-wide expansion.

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for this position are:

  • Studying towards a BSc or MSc in Geography, GIS or other relevant degree where GIS skills have been developed.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Proficient in QGIS and Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint
  • Experience in ArcGIS (desirable)
  • Sound understanding of spatial processes;
  • Good problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work with GIS best practices and corporate standards;
  • Enthusiastic, confident and driven;
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written);
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills;
  • Team player;
  • Creative and innovative;
  • Ability to represent the organisation in a professional manner seeking to build positive working relationships;
  • Demonstrate the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace; and
  • Experience in programming and software development (desirable)

Placement Duration

The placement will last 100 hours (approximately), including working one day per week between January and March 2019.
